Dive in a volcanic lake at Bracciano

Bracciano

You walk into this one. The site is a stretch of Bracciano's lakefront where the bottom shelves away gently and there is no current to fight, which is why the operator says it works in any month of the year.

How the day goes

  1. Kit up on the lakefront at Bracciano, where the entry to the water is straight off the shore.
  2. Walk in — no boat, no crossing — and follow the slope of the bottom down.
  3. Fresh water in a volcanic crater, nothing pushing you anywhere, so the dive is about looking.
  4. Out the way you came in, up the same slope and back onto the shore on foot.

You need a diving qualification and a doctor's clearance for this — without them, the same lake takes you out on a paddleboard or a kayak instead.
