Under a house on Via della Pace, Orvieto keeps going downwards: grain stores, cisterns, wells and cellars cut into the soft tufo, level below level.

How the day goes

  1. Step off the street and go down into the rock under the town.
  2. Etruscan grain stores and cisterns, medieval wells, cellars that still smell of wine.
  3. Sculptures cut straight into the tufo, and a plant fossil held in the rock.
