Sperlonga

Sperlonga

A day out in Sperlonga

A white hill town over the sea, with the emperor Tiberius's dining cave underneath it.

Sperlonga is a stack of whitewashed houses on a headland between two bays, and the reason it is white is that it faces the sun all day. Below it, Tiberius built a villa around a natural sea cave and had dinner served inside it; the sculpture found in that cave is in the museum next door.

The coast either side is sea caves and coves reachable only by boat, and the skippers who run those days out know which ones you can swim into.
