Sorano

Sorano

A day out in Sorano

Tufa country at its emptiest: three walled villages within sight of each other, and a hot spring running between them.

5 days outthe nearest is a 2 h 19 drive from Rome

Sorano itself hangs over the Lente valley with its fortress at one end and the collegiate church at the other. Sovana, down the road, is one street of stone with an Etruscan necropolis in the woods below it, and Montorio keeps its walls above the fields.

The spring between Sorano and Pitigliano comes out warm and has been made into a pool with a spa attached. It is the one thing here you pay for, and it is what turns two hours of driving into a day rather than a detour.
