Rocca Di Papa

Rocca di Papa

A day out in Rocca di Papa

The highest of the Castelli towns, on the cone inside the crater.

8 days outthe nearest is a 41 min drive from Rome

Rocca di Papa is built up the side of Monte Cavo, the volcanic cone standing inside the larger Alban crater. The old quarter is a spiral of stairs and arches, and from the top you see both lakes and the sea on a clear day.

The Roman Sacred Way still runs up the mountain to where the temple of Jupiter Latiaris stood — you walk the original basalt paving. Below, the woods and the two crater lakes are half an hour of anybody's afternoon.
