Piglio

A day out in Piglio

The Cesanese country — the one red wine the hills east of Rome are known for.

9 things to bookthe nearest is a 1 h 10 drive from Rome

Piglio sits under the Ernici mountains at the head of the Sacco valley, and the slopes below it are planted with Cesanese, a grape that grows well almost nowhere else. The wineries here are small and family-run and most of them will sit you down.

It is close enough to Rome to be a half-day and far enough into the hills to feel like the country. Come in autumn if you can, when the harvest is on.
