Ostia
The sea end of Rome, reached by the train from Piramide, with a pine forest behind the beach that goes on for kilometres.
5 days outthe nearest is a 38 min drive from Rome
This is the closest coast to the city and it is nobody's postcard, but it is where Romans sail and ride. There are schools on the seafront that will put you on the helm the same afternoon, and stables inside the Castelporziano pinewood that ride out through the trees and come onto the sand at the end.
The old village up the road, next to the excavations, is a walled block of brick with a Renaissance church in the middle of it, and it takes twenty minutes to walk round.
