Montefalco stands on a low hill in the middle of the Umbrian valley with the whole plain around it, which is where the nickname comes from. The estates below the walls are the reason to drive out: Sagrantino is grown almost nowhere else, and the cellars here run tastings with the vineyard walk included.
There are truffles in the oak woods on the same estates, and at least one of them will take you out with the dogs in the morning and cook what you find at lunch. In town there is the cathedral and, in the hills behind, a sanctuary with a view back over the valley.
