Montecchio

A day out in Montecchio

The Umbrian side of the Tiber valley, and the cellars in it.

Montecchio is over the border in Umbria, on the hills above the river between Orvieto and Narni. It is wine country of the serious kind — the estates here export, and the cellar tours are built around what happens in the barrel room rather than the view.

Which is not to say there is no view. The vineyard walks end with lunch among the vines, and the evening tastings run until the light goes.
