The Caldara is a small volcanic field in the middle of the forest where gas comes up through a pool and the ground is warm: white birches around it, nothing built, and you walk in. The aqueduct that Trajan built to bring this water to Rome still runs through the woods nearby.
The way to see it is on horseback, and this is a riding place first: stables in the woods that ride out through the oaks and the streams, and a full day in the saddle that gets as far as the ruined town of Monterano.
