Cervara is carved out of the mountain rather than built on it — stairs into the stone, a sculpture trail chiselled along the streets, and a view that runs the whole Aniene valley. Painters have come here since the eighteen-hundreds and there is a plaque for most of them.
Above the village the Simbruini plateaus open out: high grassland, beech forest, red deer, and unsurfaced tracks that take a quad or a horse rather than a car.
