Caserta
The largest royal palace in Europe, and a hill town behind it that the palace made everyone forget.
6 days outthe nearest is a 2 h 14 drive from Rome
The Bourbon palace is the reason for the drive, and the reason it takes a whole day: the state rooms are one ticket with the park, and the park runs uphill for kilometres to a waterfall fed by an aqueduct built for the purpose. The English Garden is at the top.
Casertavecchia is the old town up the hill, abandoned when the court moved down to the plain, with a Norman cathedral still standing in it. The aqueduct itself crosses the valley on three tiers of arches and can be seen from the road for free.
