Bomarzo
A wood full of stone monsters, carved in the sixteenth century by a duke who had just lost his wife and never explained any of it.

The Sacro Bosco is not a garden and was never meant to be pretty: giants, dragons, a leaning house and a mouth of hell big enough to walk into, cut from the boulders where they lay. The inscriptions argue with the visitor. Guides read it as a sequence rather than a list, and it changes what you are looking at.
Above the village, the Selva di Malano has Etruscan carvings, altars cut into rock faces and a pyramid, and needs somebody who knows where they are. The cathedral in the village is free and takes ten minutes.
